BIM Surpassing Boundaries

BIM rising beyond boundaries…

There are many forces like the rise of the expert, the growing complexity and speed of projects and the increasing recognition of BIM as a catalyst, enabler and facilitator of team collaboration to create a timely opportunity for organizations that hold building information modeling (BIM).

Those, who work with BIM, get an unprecedented opportunity to learn many things like how buildings go together, how projects are scheduled, what are the cost implications of decisions and impact on the environment. At the same time, the construction professional still needs to unlearn with BIM that they can start by asking some questions like which aspects of the conventional design process change with BIM, what methods and strategies and knowledge must be abandoned due to Building Information modeling. The most important question is that what needs to be unlearned while learning to work in BIM.

While working in BIM, the major three steps that we need to address to meet our goal are learn, detach and finally transcend. Among them, the most important is the detachment, which is breaking with tradition. The word detachment here means that we should be flexible and agile while learning instead of holding on tightly to our ideas, prejudices or agendas. Then we can move beyond them.

Those, who are engaged in the construction industry, should have skills and a mindset to work productively and effectively in a collaborative setting in order to achieve a higher level of Building Information modeling use. Even though working with Building Information modeling enables our collaboration, it is our choice to decide whether or not to look beyond BIM as a tool and embrace it as a process. Building Information modeling is a powerful facilitator and catalyst of team collaboration, once recognized as a process.

People have a misconception that knowledge in Building Information modeling is alone will lead to greater leadership opportunities on integrated teams. But BIM technical expertise is more important than increasing one’s social intelligence or ability to relate well to others. So, go wide and deep. Go against common wisdom and strengthen your soft skills.

You have to transcend BIM to master BIM.
